Season of the Witch Official Site News

Season of the Witch posterI’m morbidly curious about Nic Cage’s Season of the Witch. I like the idea of a medieval supernatural film with knights and monsters, but at the same time, it’s a Nic Cage movie. Even worse, it’s a Nic Cage movie directed by Dominic Sena, who I like to think of as “the poor man’s Michael Bay” (yeah, think about that one for a second…how’re you feeling about this movie now?). On the positive side, it does feature Ron Perlman–and I think we all love him.

If you’re still undecided about whether this flick will be worth catching in a theater or waiting for DVD, I doubt there’s anything on the new fully launched official website that’s going to change your mind. That being said, you can still swing by and have a gander at the trailer, peruse still galleries, and explore some other material related to the movie. The site’s pretty cool looking–I’ll give them that.

Season of the Witch is due out on March 19th. Here’s an official plot description from back in October…

As the Black Plague rages across 14th century Europe, one brave knight Lavey, is tasked with transporting a girl suspected of being the witch who caused the pandemic to trial. Believing she is wrongly accused, Lavey and a group of wary followers fight through a mystical and treacherous landscape to a hallowed place where her innocence can be proved and Europe’s curse can be lifted. Unbeknownst to Lavey, even darker forces await them…

Season of the Witch poster

The guys over at Shock landed the exclusive debut of this poster for Dominic Sena’s Season of the Witch a few days ago, but now a nice unwatermarked image is available–so I’m posting it here in case you missed it.

The film stars Nic Cage and Ron Perlman. Here’s the plot breakdown:

Season of the Witch Trailer Looking Good

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I’ve been following Season of the Witch since it was first announced last year. The story, which finds a group of medieval knights charged with transporting a witch, who may be responsible for the black plague, to a mountain monastery sounded pretty cool. The cast includes Nic Cage (who, let’s face it, guarantees nothing in terms of quality these days) and genre fave Ron Perlman. The other potential negative here is that the film was directed by Dominic “any shot that lasts over 1.5 seconds without an cut is too long” Sena. So, I’ve hopeful that this thing might turn out well, but there were some variables working against it.

Fandango debuted the first trailer for the film, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t look good. If they’d managed to keep the goddamn stupid Marilyn Manson music out of it, I’d be even more excited. Who puts fucking Marilyn Manson in a trailer for a film set in medieval times? Please, fire whoever made that call. I’ve got nothing against Manson, it’s just that I’ve seen a lot of people ruin horror movies and trailers by including his music in trailers where they don’t fit. So, please, cut it the fuck out already.

Anyway, enough ranting from me. Check out the trailer below. Season of the Witch will be in theaters on March 19th, 2010.

Season of the Witch Gets a Release Date

season-of-the-witch

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard anything about Nic Cage’s latest–Season of the Witch–but news came yesterday that the film will make its big screen debut on March 19th of next year.

The film, directed by Dominic Sena and starring Cage, Ron Perlman, and Claire Foy, revolves around a group of knights tasked with transporting a witch to a mountain monastery. There, a group of monk’s seek to destroy her power–a power they believe is responsible for causing the black plague.

Sounds good to me–but Nic Cage films are all over the place these past few years (and most of those places have been located in the vicinity of “unwatchable”, it seems). Here’s to hoping that this one might mark a career turn around for the Oscar winner.

Season of the Witch Finds Distribution

season-of-the-witch

Not long after this blog first started (back in late September of 2008–how time flies…) I posted some news and pictures about a movie called Season of the Witch. Basically, the film (which stars Nic Cage and Ron Perlman and has nothing to do with Silver Shamrock Halloween masks) follows a group of 14th century knights tasked with taking a girl believed to be a witch (who used her dark magic to start the black plague) to a mountain monastery. Sounded pretty cool–and then we heard nothing about it for months.

That silence was broken yesterday when it was announced the film was part of a multi-movie distribution deal struck between Relativity Media and Lionsgate. No tentative release date has been announced, but rest assured that the film is still in the pipeline and will be released at some point in the future. Given Cage’s recent track record, that might actually be a bad thing…

Season of the Witch Casting Update

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Over the weekend, I posted a piece about Ron Perlman joining the cast of Season of the Witch. Today, more casting news (courtesy of Variety) has come to light. Stephen Campbell Moore, Claire Foy, and Robbie Sheehan will be joining Perlman and star Nicolas Cage in Dominic Sena’s supernatural chiller.

Season of the Witch tells the story of a 14th century group of French knights tasked with transporting a young girl to a mountain monastery. Their cargo is believed to be a witch, responsible for causing the Black Plague.

Filming begins starts this November in Hungary and Austria.

I’m still excited about this film–despite the nagging feeling in my gut that it’s going to be a huge letdown. Hopefully Cage and Sena can pull it off. In an unrelated note, let’s hope they release some photos or concept art or something for this movie soon so I can stop having to post photos of the actors in other roles or cruising around town…

Perlman Joins Season of the Witch Cast

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

When I first heard about the upcoming film, Season of the Witch, I immediately thought “why in the hell would anyone remake Halloween 3?” Luckily, this is not a remake of the much maligned third installment of Halloween (memorable for not having Michael Myers in it, and for the insanely catchy Silver Shamrock song) but is instead an entirely new property.

Ron Perlman has just joined the cast, taking a spot alongside Nic Cage in Dominic Sena’s upcoming chiller about a group of 14th century knights tasked with taking a woman (who may be a witch) to a mountain abbey. There, a group of monks will try to destroy her power, which is believed to be responsible for the Black Plague.

I’m torn on this movie. The plot sounds great, but Nic Cage and Dominic Sena aren’t exactly confidence-inspiring. Cage is on a cinematic tear that’s included turds like Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man remake. Dominic Sena’s films are engaging, but his style is often reminds me of everything I hate about Michael Bay’s films (particularly the quick edits). Adding Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman, to the mix seems like a great idea, but can the presence of Perlman make up for these two other potential negatives? Only time will tell.  Season of the Witch begins filming next month. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope for the best.
