A Better Look at the Piranha 3D Trailer

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Alex Aja’s Piranha 3D sure has been in the news a lot lately. First it was for the trailer debut (attached to prints of Avatar), then it was because it was delayed until August (for any number of reasons–it depends on who you asked and who you believe). Now there’s finally a watchable version of that trailer online (replacing the really awful and nearly unwatchable one that’s been making the rounds for the past week or so–thanks Trailer Spy!). I’ll say this: The movie looks more interesting when you can actually see what’s happening in the trailer.

Here’s the plot synopsis. I don’t really care what the movie’s about–it’s got Richard Dreyfuss playing a character modeled after his role as Hooper in Jaws. That’s all I needed to hear to get my ass in theater seat.

A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

Piranha 3D is now tentatively slated to hit theaters this August–unless the Weinsteins go broke between now and then.

Piranha 3D Gets Bumped

piranha-poster2

Two stories today about release dates being shuffled. First up, Alexander Aja’s remake of Piranha is on the move.

The film, which was originally slated for a March release, the flick has now moved to April 16th. If you have a head for useless numbers and dates, you’ll realize that the new date is the day the Nightmare on Elm Street remake was supposed to release–only that movie has jumped to the 30th of April because there were no other films opening on that weekend.

No details have been given for the shift in dates–and given that it’s such a small move, there’s probably no need for alarm. Those flesh-crazy fish will be making short work of spring breakers before you know it…

More Gory Set Photos from Piranha 3D

piranha-3d-gore

I posted some of the recent gory set photos (courtesy of Fangoria) from Alex Aja’s Piranha 3D a few days ago. Turns out there were even more lurking about.

Brutal As Hell (another horror site I highly recommend checking out–it’s chock full of good shit) did some digging and found some more disturbing shots (apparently they came along a day after the first batch) from Fangoria/Gorezone.

The new stills are every bit as gross as the last batch (the floating severed leg is a nice touch), but just to keep things interesting, they’ve mixed in shots of lots of women in bikinis as well. Clearly, the photographer realizes that all horror fans love a little T&A with their blood and guts.

Click here to see the full gallery.

Piranha 3D is due out on March 19th of next year. Based on the stills alone, I’m getting pretty excited to see just what Aja has in store for us with his latest remake.

More Gore From Piranha 3D

piranha-gore

Alex Aja’s Piranha remake seems to be coming along quite nicely. Every time a new set photo emerges, it’s someone who’s been on the wrong end of a piranha attack. Today is no exception.

Fangoria scored some exclusive photos from the shoot–and once again, they’re highlighting the stellar FX work of KNB studios. KNB is set to handle the FX chores on this Predator reboot/sequel everyone’s talking about–and if you were concerned about the team’s ability to pull it off, their work here should allay your fears (and if you’re a horror fan, you weren’t worried in the first place–KNB’s been doing fantastic work for years).

Anyway, that’s one of the new set photos above. Go here to see more–it’s worth the click.

March 19th of next year can’t get here soon enough…

Gossip Girl Set to Become Piranha Snack

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Jessica SzohrI’ll be honest, I’ve never watched an episode of Gossip Girl. The commercials alone (which they run during Supernatural) are more than enough to make me wanna gouge my eyeballs out. I don’t know a soul who watches this show (including my own sister, who’s usually all in on shows like this and Felicity) but somehow it stays on the air–and its cast is getting parts in other productions. Hollywood works in strange and mysterious ways…

E! Online is reporting that Jessica Szohr is the latest addition to the cast of Alex Aja’s Piranha remake.

Szohr has signed on to play Kelly, a hot young townie caught up in the excitement of co-eds who have descended upon the area for spring break.

Previously announced cast for the Dimension Films project includes Elisabeth Shue as the local sheriff, Ving Rhames as one of her deputies and Adam Scott as a Navy diver sent in to help rescue the town.

Richard Dreyfuss will also be featured in a nod to his work in—what else?—Jaws.”

That whole Dreyfuss thing guarantees I will see this movie. Hooper in Piranha? How awesome is that? If he says something along the lines of “what we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, an eating machine. It’s really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks, and that’s all.“  I’ll die a happy man. If he says it to a mayor sporting a blazer with anchors on it I’ll be knocking people in the theater out with all my fist pumping. You don’t even wanna know what could happen if he says “well this was not a boat accident!” I’m clearly easy to please.

Enough geeking out from me, though. Here’s the official synopsis:

Jaws… lots and lots of jaws. From acclaimed director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D, in the latest eye-popping 3D technology.

Piranha is scheduled to take a bite out of the box office on March 19th, 2010.
